Jolla strengthens its board and management
Jolla enters the next phase in its development and prepares for the sales start in the second half of this year. The number of personnel has grown to 70 and the team extends to a wide network of collaboration partners. To ensure the successful market entry and further growth, the company is strengthening its board and management structure.

The Jolla Board continues to be chaired by Antti Saarnio, one of the Jolla founders. The other board members are Steve Lau from China Fortune, Mohamed Boukerche, a representative of a private investor, Ari Jaaksi, an industry advisor and a long time expert in open source development, and Stefano Mosconi, CTO of Jolla and one of the company founders.

Jolla is appointing Tomi Pienimäki as the new CEO as of May 6th. Tomi joins Jolla from Itella Corporation, one of the largest logistics operators in the Nordic countries. At Itella, Tomi has gained extensive experience in business management and managing large technology organizations. He also has experience from the start-up world in the role of a board member in several companies and having co-founded Done Solutions, an IT company, in 1999.

This appointment allows Marc Dillon, who has been Jolla's CEO as of October 2012, to fully concentrate on the development of Sailfish operating system as Head of Software Development. Marc has been in charge of Jolla's software development right from the start and his strong focus on this will be crucial in the months leading to the market entry of the first Jolla phone and the company's success when the sales starts.

"Jolla is a great company with an exciting and promising future. I truly believe we can make a difference and bring something unique to the consumers. My task is to listen very closely to our customers and further build the collaboration network. I also want to ensure that our team can fully concentrate on the most important task: bringing the first device to the market this year," says Tomi Pienimäki, the new CEO of Jolla.

"Tomi brings a great combination of expertise in leading large technology organizations and understanding of the world of growth companies. He is an excellent addition to the Jolla team and will offer valuable insights into the company operations," says Antti Saarnio, Chairman of the Board. "I warmly thank Marc for his inspirational leadership in the CEO role during the past months. Marc continues to lead our Sailfish OS development, and his drive and talent continue to be crucially important for us, when we navigate towards the launch of our first device," Antti Saarnio continues.

"I am really excited to get an experienced executive such as Tomi on board so that I am again able to give 100% attention to what I love – working on the product with the Jolla team. An important part of my role will also be spreading the news on Sailfish OS to the world and further grow the movement we currently have supporting and co-creating it," says Marc Dillon.

Jolla will showcase its first device in May. A pre-sales campaign is expected to start after mid-May, and the actual sales start will take place during the second half of 2013.

Jolla's first smartphone to be unveiled in early May!
A truly good news for all those (including myself) who had been so disappointed about having to wait until late 2013 / early 2014 (as previously announced) for the first Sailfish OS smartphone from Jolla: it will be announced in early May (!) with pre-orders to start soon after that. Money obtained from pre-orders will be then used to cover the manufacturing cost of the first batch of phones.

But wait, there's more! Jolla will offer custom software configurations (probably application sets, UI customization) to choose from (with different price levels) and those pre-ordering the phone will be able to choose what suits them the most.

I guess it's time to quickly port all my applications to Sailfish OS (which, BTW, is a quick, easy and very pleasant process).

SunCalc PREMIUM for Nokia N9 / N950
SunCalc PREMIUM is a much enhanced version of SunCalc - an application to track the Sun's position in the sky and calculate times of all Sun related events (sunrise/sunset, dusk/dawn, day/night length, twilights, transit, etc). In addition to all features offered by the standard version, SunCalc Premium provides the following enhancements:
  • storing three favourite locations and switching between them (in addition to coordinates obtained from the GPS receiver)

  • entering coordinates manually or selecting your locations on a map

  • Altitude Limit function to monitor when the Sun gets above/below user selected altitude and how long it stays above it each day

  • Shadow Calculator and Shadow Compass to calculate Sun shadow's length and direction for any time and location, for an object of user-selected height

  • Day Length Graph - an interactive graph showing the length of day (sunrise-to-sunset and dawn-to-dusk) and night for the entire year

  • Sun's azimuth and elevation is calculated and shown for each hour - along with Sun Compass this allows quickly checking where in the sky the Sun will be at any date/time

  • advanced settings to choose how to calculate day length (sunrise to sunset or dawn to dusk) and sunrise/sunset times (for the center of Sun's disc or its upper limb touching the horizon, with or without atmospheric refeaction accounted for)

  • time zone setting for each location - graphs and data are calculated in local time of the destination

  • real-time calculation of Sun-related astronomical data (azimuth, elevation, distance from Earth, hour angle, right ascension, declination, ecliptical latitude and longitude, apparent diameter, obliquity of the Ecliptic, etc)

  • and more...

With SunCalc you can easily plan all your activities depending on day length and sunlight intensity, schedule your trips and vacations to get the most of Sun light and the longest days in the destination of your travel, photographers can use the program to choose the time and location of the best Sun position and shadow length/angle for their scenes, it can help you set up your solar panels... or simply keep you well informed about everything related to solar illumination and daylight.

Jolla will make Sailfish available for the N950 and other devices
Jolla has officially confirmed on their Twitter that they will release the code making it possible to build Sailfish OS for a number of existing devices like the N950. They won't support the N9 directly but there is nothing that could prevent the community from porting Saifish to the N9 as well. The N950 or the N9 won't provide the performance or user experience that Jolla's own hardware will bring in 2013, but it is a great news especially for developers as it will make it possible to test applications ported (or newly created) to Jolla on a real hardware before any actual Jolla phones become available.

Jolla's MeeGo-based OS and UI to be unveiled next month
The Finnish based company Jolla formed by ex-Nokians has confirmed that it will announce its new MeeGo (Mer) based mobile platform code-named Sailfish at the Slush startup conference in Helsinki, Finland, on November 21-22. The first device from Jolla will be announced before Christmas, along with developer support and the SDK.

Jolla has also recently announced the launch of a Hong-Kong based alliance which will license the MeeGo-based mobile operating system to other device manufacturers and service developers beginning spring 2013. In the core of the alliance is the MeeGo based mobile operating system which Jolla calls "Sailfish". The data center of the Sailfish alliance will be located in the Cyberport techonology center in Hong Kong. In addition Jolla will set up its own research and development center in mainland China, probably Shanghai or Beijing.

Jolla will be hosting a separate, in-depth session during the Slush event to showcase the user interface, and a press Q&A session. The Jolla user interface will be incorporated into the previously announced Sailfish alliance software. Jolla has been working on the scalability and user experience based on MeeGo in order to be able to support multiple different device categories. This development has now reached a point that Jolla can showcase the user interface, its differentiation from the existing mobile UI's and its possibilities as part of the Sailfish alliance.

Jussi Hurmola, CEO of Jolla, said: "I'm thrilled to finally be able to show the user interface we have been working on, and it will be exciting to open the developer story with SDK and applications to the public."

If you're interested in astronomy, give it a try - it's the only such advanced astronomical application made specially for the N9 / N950.
